Letter to Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission re: BWXT

Published on December 6, 2019

The company that operates the uranium procession plant at 1025 Lansdowne Avenue has applied for a renewal of it's license. The facility is regulated by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), a federal agency, and as part of the licensing renewal process, hearings are scheduled for March 4-5, 2020 at the Regency Ballroom in the Holiday Inn Peterborough Waterfront, located at 150 George Street North in Peterborough, Ontario. Videoconferencing will be available from the Havilland Hall in the Holiday Inn Toronto Yorkdale, located at 3450 Dufferin Street in Toronto, Ontario.

As neither of these locations are very accessible to residents of Davenport, on November 27, 2019 I wrote to the CNSC to call on them to find a local venue for hearings so that our community could fully participate. You can read the letter here.

I have also been in touch with our federal MP Julie Dzerowicz to share my concerns and I understand that she has also requested a local hearing as well as a community information meeting about the BWXT Facility in January.

I will share more information about the meetings as soon as they are confirmed.

Read the revised Notice of Public Hearing on the CNSC website here.

Please note that requests to intervene must be filed with the Commission Secretariat by
January 27, 2020.

Information about BWXT and their application can be found here.
